You entail to either install the Klite Codec Pack (Standard) or the Divx Codec. The Divx pack single contains the codec for Divx (avi) but the Klite Codec has more codecs.

i would stay away from k-lite codecs only for the simple fact its a huge box that wich half you'll never use and should you install any other codec you'll a short time ago have problems. the xvid codecs is for any and adjectives avi files. the dvix codec is basically impossible to tell apart thing but will see you to play dvix format vids..

dvix and xvid are the most downloaded codecs on the internet.
windows medium player is supposed to be able to play AVI however as beside all microsoft products it sux and does not do the post properly.

Try Gom Player I use it and install it on all my clients computers.
