Help beside laptop display?

i hold a 17 inch widescreen laptop and i recently get a 23 inch widescreen tv. i plugged my laptop into the tv and it worked. but after the second time i used it, my laptop made all of the icon and text bigger and the display on the tv be different because it wasnt full screen. any counsel on what to do or even if i should contact anyone would be great

Check to see if the resolution has be changed as it sounds like it have been lowered.
