External Firewire Hard drive for Mac that you can work out of?

I hold a Mac G4 laptop & I went to an apple store & a mac ace told me that the hard drive is failing. I inevitability to replace the internal drive or he told me it was cheaper to buy an external firewire rock-hard drive for the computer. He said you can get one that you can work straight out of. Right in a minute I have an external USB firm drive, but you can't work out of it.. you can only store things. Does anyone know an external firewire Mac unyielding drive that I can WORK from?? I found these hard drives, but it doesn't specify. If anyone have 1 & knows for sure it works please tolerate me know the name or include a connection if possible. Thank you! 10 points to the best aide!

The only object for a firewire drive is to boot from as is the case within your situation really you can take any harddrive and buy an external unyielding drive case next to firewire and that will enable you to copy files over and boot from the external drive if the internal fail which means you can buy a conventional 3.5 hard drive which will definatly be cheaper than replacing the laptop drive.
you can't boot from a USB drive.

one and only internal or firewire. Time to buy a firewire drive, or replace the internal drive.

UPDATE:

YOU CAN BOOT FROM A FIREWIRE DRIVE, if it has an operating system on it.

CMS is fine... and cheap.
