Hardrive salvage?

I own a Sony Vaio PCG-K45 laptop, and I just now broke it. I need to remove the hardrive. How can i recuperate the data on it? Is here also some type of equipment I can purchase to recover the background?

If the drive is undamaged, just remove it and connect it using a USB external housing- that's the easiest.
