...what are the similarities and differences between a dual core processor and a single core processor next to the same Clock speed?

they work the exact same and beside similar performance for majority tasks .. where the dualcore will shine is if u want to run multiple creamy processing usage tasks at once ... like convert two movies simultaneously into another format while surfing the network and burning a dvd .. so in other words a dualcore increases productivity not the speed of individual tasks necessarily ..
Main difference is the cache, my matured p4 had 1x1024kb cache to verbs data and my topical e6600 has 2x2024kb cache to move notes, also the fsb of the p4 was I believe 800mhz and the core 2 duo is 1066, as for pentium D, I believe its 800mhz as all right.
Dual core means near are 2 processors running at once at that clock speed. So if you see a single core at 2.0ghz it means that core is running at 2.0ghz. While a dual core have TWO cores running at 2.0ghz. This allows the pc to multitask and divide up work between the cores to some extent than just overload one core near all of the work. That's why a single core near a really high clock can be whitewashed by a dual or multi core with lower clock speeds because the others can touch the divided work better. The single core might be more powerful in clock expressions.. but it can't fully utilize the power as well as the multi cores..



Analogy.. would you approaching water coming out superquickly from a straw or sea coming out at a decent rate from two hoses? Yeah..
